Clementson Group
Research in the Clementson Group focuses on developing innovative strategies for the selective generation of carbon-centered radicals — for example, via photochemistry.
The highly reactive intermediates enable both the formation and the controlled cleavage of strategic carbon–carbon bonds, providing powerful new approaches to the synthesis of architecturally complex molecules.
We explore these capabilities in two main directions:
- Antimicrobial resistance – Designing and synthesizing novel chemical modalities to target bacterial proteins, including proof-of-concept PROTAC-inspired degraders, as a new strategy to address drug resistance.
- Total synthesis of complex natural products – Applying radical-mediated bond construction and selective C–C bond scission to streamline access to biologically active natural products and analogues thereof.
By harnessing the unique reactivity of radicals, our work expands the synthetic toolbox and opens new strategic possibilities in molecular design. Operating at the interface of methodology development, chemical biology, and complex molecule synthesis, we aim to deliver both fundamental advances in organic chemistry and new approaches to urgent challenges in health-related research.
